Online poker has been around for a long, long time. So how did it start about? To be honest, nobody quite knows for sure where exactly its video origins lie. However we do know that wherever those origins stem from, they are responsible for video poker as we know it today.
Probably one of the oldest card games relating to online casino to exist today, video poker can be linked back to a Persian game known as nas, which was played over 3,000 years ago in what’s known today as Iran. Historians today think that nas probably spread through the United States through New Orleans and the Mississippi, brought in by Persian sailors in the early 1800s.
From there what would become video poker later in life spread to the central and western United States over a period of long decades, carried by gamblers and travelers on the Mississippi. Before it ever acquired the video component poker was the game of choice for con men and other gamblers looking to snatch the money of travelers away from them, though it has obviously since gained more legitimacy.
The online video based poker game that we know today has changed quite a bit since then. Up until the last ten or fifteen years or so it was a staple in so-called brick-and-mortar casinos, overshadowed in popularity by blackjack and roulette (and whether or not they continue to beat out poker today is in doubt – you don’t see roulette being played on TV very often, now do you?).
And there are many new ways to play it, particularly online. There are entire casinos dedicated to playing Texas Hold’Em, Seven Card Stud, Five Card Stud and any number of variations on the standard game. And you can find several different ways to play each one, too: you can either play them against computer programs in software-bought games, take on live opponents on casino websites, or play against the house in those very same casinos. In all of these locales, however, the game plays the exact same way it does in real life.
